Boise State University Alcohol Policy, Enforcement and Assistance
As a member of the Boise State community, you are required to adhere to campus policies and state code regarding alcohol. Below you will find an expectations summary and helpful resources.
Alcohol Defined: Any liquor (distilled spirits), beer (fermented malt beverage), or wine containing ethyl alcohol.
Seeking Assistance
Counseling Services are available on campus for students who want to work with a caring professional about alcohol use and abuse. Call (208) 426-1601 or (208) 426-1661. The Counseling Services office is located at Taylor Hall, Suite B103.
Call University Security, (208) 426-1453, if you have been the victim of an alcohol-related crime. Sexual assault crisis response is available through the Women's Center, (208) 426-4259.
Boise State Student Code of Conduct and University Housing Alcohol Policies
Code of Conduct Article 4, Section 2 - Alcohol: A violation may include, but is not limited to, possession, consumption, or distribution of alcoholic beverages. This is prohibited in University owned, leased or operated facilities and on campus grounds unless otherwise allowed by University policy. Disruptive behavior exhibited as the result of consumed alcohol is prohibited campus wide, even if the alcohol was consumed elsewhere. Members of the University community will adhere to all state and federal laws with regard to alcohol.
University Housing Handbook - Alcohol:
No alcohol is permitted in University Housing facilities regardless of age.*
No empty alcohol containers or alcohol paraphernalia is allowed in University Housing facilities regardless of age.* (Such items will be confiscated and used in the Conduct Process).
Students cannot be in the presence of alcohol.*
21+ students living in designated 21+ housing units must follow state and federal laws regarding alcohol use, as well as University policy. Students in these areas cannot possess nor consume alcohol when any under 21 students are present.
Students may not purchase, provide or make alcohol available to underage students or their guests.
Public intoxication is not acceptable.
Possession and consumption of alcohol in public areas of University owned buildings or grounds is not allowed.
Kegged or shared/common sources of alcohol (punch bowls, party balls, etc) are not allowed on University Housing owned property.
Student's personal alcohol consumption that infringes upon the rights of other persons or property is not acceptable.
Drinking games are not allowed.
*Exceptions to asterisked items apply ONLY to University Apartments and University Suites B, units that are inhabited solely by 21+ residents AND are designated by University Housing as 21+ units.
Individuals found in violation of the Boise State Code of Conduct/University Housing Alcohol Policies will be subject to the appropriate sanctions, which include one or more of the following:
Alcohol and other drug assessment, counseling and related fees.
A warning, disciplinary probation or expulsion from the University, based on violation severity and repeat offenses.
Referral to legal authorities for prosecution.
State Laws and Violation Consequences
Idaho Code states it is unlawful for any person under the age of 21 to purchase, attempt to purchase, possess, serve or consume alcohol. Code violators are subject to a misdemeanor citation and possible arrest.
Conviction may include fines, jail time, community service and alcohol assessment and treatment with expenses covered by the convicted.
Persons convicted of underage alcohol purchase, possession and consumption are subject to loss of driving privileges. Maximum length of suspension/revocation is one year, re-offenders up to two years
