History

The Boise State Women's Center created the Larry Selland Humanitarian Award in 1997 in honor of Dr. Larry G. Selland, former Dean, Executive Vice President and Interim President of Boise State University. Dr. Selland died of cancer in 1996.

Dr. Selland was a tireless advocate for diversity on our campus and was an early supporter of the Women's Center. As interim president, he secured funds for the Children's Center, renovation of the Canyon County Center, additional student apartments and the acquisition of the Health Science Riverside building. Also during this time, the State Board of Education approved Boise State's first doctoral degree and two committees assessed the future of the university.

Nominee Qualities and Eligibility

This award honors those men and women who exemplify Dr. Selland's caring nature, his compassion, his integrity and his encouragement to women and people of color. Two awards are given each year, one for a student and one for a faculty or staff member. As you read the eulogy, you will get a better feel for qualities that nominees should demonstrate. Also, to be eligible, a student must be a current BSU student in good academic standing (2.0 GPA). Eligible employees must be currently employed at BSU.
